[ this is. way too much. it's a good thing they were on the bus and at least recognize a tv, but the most complicated machinery he's dealt with so far is a remote control.
he'll slowly step through the room, careful not to bump into anything because he's honestly just. so unsure of what he's looking at in general. it does seem like someone was here recently, though.
so he'll just... sit at the desk? he sits. he touches the can to see if it's still cold, but otherwise stares at the laptop and screens warily, without touching just yet. can they at least read the letters on the keyboard? he peers at the glowy screen, looking very lost. ]
[ What Shinobu should've done: read about modern technology in the library in Blue's Clues mansion. What she didn't do: exactly that
Yeah, wow, this is a terrible group for recognizing anything in here except for.... ]
Is that what I threw at the door?
[ Looking at the Doritos and Dr. Pepper. She looks at everything warily before she goes up to the monitors and touches the center one. She can make some connections, but there are something she just can't understand. ]
It does look like our cabins, but what does that mean? For what purpose... and what is... Cee Cee Tee Vee....?
[Opening the left drawer, Giyuu will find a thin stack of blank sheets of paper, a box of pencils, and a (closed) compact mirror. Would they even recognize what that is? God, I hope so.
While Giyuu does this, Dimitri will find that the can is still cold! Little beads of moisture have begun to build up, but it seems like it hasn't been sitting out here very long at all... Which is odd, considering the fact that it's empty. Seated at the desk, however, he will get to take a better look at the laptop. The keyboard is WASD, and lights up in rainbow colors. Checking the laptop screen, he will see that the program that is currently open is S****Y. Too bad none of them know about ABBA's greatest hits album... That said, there's another program running and visible in the taskbar. It simply reads CMPNTGN.
It is very unfortunate that he will understand literally none of this. Good lord.
Touching the center monitor only leaves an imprint on Shinobu's fingie on it. Boo.]
[ GIYUU KNOWS WHAT A COMPACT MIRROR IS.... i'm crying. either way he'll pull out the compact to examine closely to see if there's anything noteworthy one that before moving to the other drawer. it's an item that women carry, right? ...though if a man wants to carry it then that's fine with him too.
giyuu doesn't care. something he does care about is figuring out what the fuck any of this stuff is. ]
Are they... [ he thinks about it for a moment as he looks back up at the screens. he doesn't know much about modern but they have movies in the taisho era so even if giyuu is largely uncultured!!! ] ...recordings?
[ though if they are it's missing nearly everything that he's used to seeing. also if they're recordings then... yeah no he can't make anything else make sense. that's about it. ]
[ He'll let Giyuu handle rifling through the drawers as Shinobu messes with the middle screen to no avail. Do they see anything happening on the other screens? Any people doing anything noteworthy?
He looks up at it all for a moment, brows drawn together in confusion. He'd watched a movie with Anaido, but this was... not the same? he can't even remark on what giyuu's saying, i hate this so much ]
I... don't know. Kocho—
[ He's going to just. Pull the laptop a little closer to them both, hitting some keys by accident. ]
Can you make sense of this...
[ HE DOESN'T EVEN KNOW WHAT TO CALL IT ] Um. This 'television.' There's some writing on it.
They could be recordings... but how? Why would we be recorded?
[ HOW DOES A CCTV WORK she doesn't even know what it is. She doesn't know what a computer is either, but at Dimitri's inquiry, she comes closer to his side. Peering over his shoulder, she looks at the laptop screen.... ]
I don't recognize anything.... Dancing Queen?

[ COMPLETELY NOT REALIZING HOW USEFUL A TRACKPAD IS cries ]
There is nothing noteworthy about the compact mirror! It's just a cute little compact mirror, the plastic shell faded from use. The right drawer doesn't have too much when Giyuu opens it, though he will find a single syringe inside. It's filled with a clear liquid. The three of them are welcome to watch the monitors, however. It is clearly daytime in the feed, and the positions of the shadows indicate that it's afternoon. A bit later in the afternoon than when they originally set out to enter the forest, in fact. They will see a couple of the other campers milling about, perhaps entering or exiting their cabins.
That said, Dimitri accidentally hits some keys — and music starts blaring through the speakers. Hope they enjoy Waterloo.]
why must it be a syringe. that is something that giyuu will not pocket without passing the information on to someone who should have it and has way more experience handling things like this. ]
Kocho, I need you to look at—
[ he'll present the syringe to her carefully. he doesn't want to stick her with it. especially since they don't know what kind of fluid is inside. is clear better than colored??? he doesn't know. and he would love to have more commentary but thanks for the buttons and the sudden music dimitri!!!!
giyuu will cover his ears (after he has handed the syringe over) and as he looks back at the monitors and just...slowly realize??? something??? ....
.....
GOD THIS MUSIC IS DISTRACTING. THESE VOICES. HE ALREADY CAN'T TECHNOLOGY. WHY THIS MUSIC. is it a blessing or a curse that giyuu picks up one of the speakers and turns it in the opposite direction??
JUST SO THAT THEY STOP BLARING AT THEM. THANK YOU. ]
[ technology is the worst, actually. he winces at the noise suddenly washing over them, but he keeps his attention on the laptop for now. he's going to talk, still having to raise his voice to be heard, but it's not like he knows how to mute the music, so. ]
Maybe it is like a 'remote control.' Anaido showed me how to use one, but...
[ he gets the concept that sometimes you can control a screen with buttons. but this has WAY more keys, and most of them are only one letter or symbol.
but if shinobu says to try the buttons, that's what he's going to do. so he kinda just—runs his big dumb yaoi hands over the keys?? in random directions? i hate my life ]
[ She's alarmed both by this syringe and then by what Dimitri does next?
She hates everything. She's going to carefully hold the syringe in one hand and then with her free hand, she places it over HIS DUMB YAOI HANDS TO STAY THEM but not before accidentally tapping the trackpad, curling her fingers around his hand to stop him. ]
Please. Just a few buttons made that music start. We have to be more cautious when this is... machinery [ ??? ] we don't know. We don't know what else it could trigger.
Turning the speakers around does nothing except that the audio now rebounds off the wall? It's fine. Anyway, I guess................. Dimitri's yaoi hands............... will do things.................. The following things happen in this order:
1. The volume rises exponentially, which is bad considering they are in a tiny cabin room. Say goodbye to your eardrums. 2. The track changes like seven hecking times. The Name of the Game, S.O.S., Fernando, The Winner Takes It All, Take a Chance on Me, He Is Your Brother, and then Dancing Queen. 3. Unfortunately, Dimitri somehow closes S*****Y — but the music keeps playing. Now they can't even shut it down. 4. This means that they get to see whatever the other application is. Yay! 5. Except then Shinobu is tapping the trackpad and closing out of the application. They get a single second to make out a list of words but no time to actually read it. Unfortunate. 6. A second after the application shuts down, all the monitors go black. The center screen now reads CONNECTION LOST. REOPEN APPLICATION TO RECONNECT. 7. The desktop background is this. Only the Recycle Bin is available from the desktop.
That said, Shinobu and Dimitri will start getting a headache the longer they look at the desktop image. If they insist on staring at it for longer than five seconds, something warm will begin to drip from their nostrils. Once they check, they will realize it is blood. Giyuu will suffer from the same effects if he does the same, too, but since he's not looking at the laptop for now he's safe.]
[ well giyuu's automatic response to the music being blasted to the high heavens is to FUCKING RIP the speakers out of the computer set up and yeets it...somewhere because clearly everything else go to absolute shit from there on out. why bother in holding things back also he likes having his eardrums.
everyone needs to be able to hear. though once that's done, giyuu misses literally everything that happens to the laptop because it's better that way and he literally has no idea what happened. what he does know and can see is that shinobu and dimitri have nosebleeds and everything has shut down???
or gone black. again, doesn't quite know what is happening but wager none of this is good. but, uh, what if he reaches over to put his hand over the screen to cover it up some?? please don't tell me it's a touch screen laptop. ]
okay well, he has no idea what he's done, but all the monitors are off and now the screen is evil and the entire room is screaming at him! so he assumes things are not very good.
he wheelies himself away a bit once he feels the blood drip against his lip, leaving giyuu to clean up as he looks for something to clean up. instead, he finds the paper and pencil in the drawer and hastily scribbles down a few details that he has wiped from existence, like the program names and some monitor messages.
he's definitely too frazzled to 'contribute' anything else right now though, sorry. maybe that's for the best? ]
if the volume of the music didnât already give her a headache, this laptop that she doesnât know is a laptop cinches it. she feels the nosebleed and leans forward, pinching her nose.
She releases her nose enough to say: ]
We should try to take whatever that is. In case someone knows how to work it.
[ sheâs going to see how the laptop is connected and wired to everything, not that she really understands it. ]
[Now that the 15 monitors are pitch black, the only source of illumination is the laptop. It doesn't have a touchscreen, but Giyuu placing his hand over the screen certainly doesn't help matters. They are now, for all intents and purpose, moving around in the dark. While they can still see each other as long as they stick close to the laptop, everything else is... well. Difficult. That said, Giyuu ripping the speakers out doesn't make the music stop. There's a screech as the speakers are roughly disconnected, the laptop jostling as the speakers hit the ground, before the music continues playing — now directly from the laptop itself. But at least the volume is manageable now.
It's a little hard to see beyond what's immediately around the laptop, but Shinobu will notice that there are all sorts of cables hooked up to it. Literally every port in the laptop is connected to something, save for the speakers. Those are gone now. But, hey! Good news. Since Giyuu is covering the image on the screen, her headache won't worsen. Blood continues to slowly drip from her nose, as well as Dimitri's, but that's fine.
Meanwhile, Dimitri is free to wheel himself back! Visibility is a little low, so he may have trouble jotting shit down... But that's not what matters. As he wheels back, the chair hits something solid.
It does not feel like the wall or door. Those are too far away.
From his periphery, a finely manicured hand reaches over to pluck the pencil from his hand.]
[ i'm glad giyuu just threw something blindly into the dark, but with the music less obnoxious, he'll deal. especially with his priorities shifting. ]
Kocho... [ he's close enough to definitely see the two of them with their nosebleeds but given the situation they can sort that out later. he's going to keep his hands to obscure the image despite not knowing if it is doing anything for better or worse.
it's not as though there's anything else that they can do for the moment other than what they are already doing. clearly the laptop is vital (they don't understand how vital) to figuring something out, plus it's a clue and they need everything they can get. does it have recordings? is it how the recordings work?? what is technology. ] I agree. We can't leave this here regardless.
[ though he has a concern about dimitri, too, since he wheeled away. don't you just break everything and ollie out—that's not allowed. ]
[ It's dark, but he can still make out a hand, so close that it nearly brushes up against his as the pencil disappears away. Guessing he's not getting a better look at whatever the hells that was, but he sure is going to try.
It takes a movement for him to arm himself again, paper crumpled in one hand and dagger drawn in the other when he suddenly bolts out of the chair, slashing into the darkness behind them.Â
His voice grits out, hoarse and dark with urgency. Was he... seeing things? It's never been that tangible— ]
[ Anyone who comes to them in the dark is suspect (never mind that theyâre the ones who caused everything to fo dark). Even if she canât see who, surely Dimitri wouldnât react to nothing.
She is going to try to disconnect the laptop from everything, not looking at the screen but also not shutting the lid since itâs their only source of light, and grab it if she can. ]
[Dimitri slashes into the darkness behind him — and his dagger makes contact with something. Flesh. Someone hisses. The blade comes away bloody. With the small amount of light afforded to them by the laptop, Dimitri will see a familiar silhouette. Long black hair and ruby red lips. As she stares back at him, clutching her upper arm, Dimitri will have no trouble recognizing her. The girl's eyes look dead. She does not hold a pencil in her hands.
Still, she whispers a soft, terrified:]
... Dimitri-san?
[And then Shinobu roughly disconnects the laptop, meeting just the slightest bit of resistance from the cables connected to the wall and monitors before they all come loose. The machine goes wild, letting out a stream of beeps and error sounds while Dancing Queen is cut short. The soft whirring of the fans goes wild. The screen goes blue, a series of white letters displayed across the screen — and then the laptop shuts down entirely, plunging them into darkness.
Something sparks from behind the desk, close to the floor.
[ wow isn't this just nice :) that voice. the darkness.
it doesn't affect him as someone(s) here as it does remind him of a weight he keeps carrying with him. worse of all that there are two conflicting instructions that happen within giyuu when shinobu tells him to cover for dimitri because of something that they've spoken about. not shinobu and him but between giyuu and dimitri and he—there's time for ask for forgiveness later.
because as soon as giyuu hears the voice, he'll reach out blindly into the dark and hopefully grab dimitri's arm to pull him back away from the sound of the voice. he can take care of himself and all of that but... there's a time and a place for that later because the sudden smell of smoke has giyuu shuffling things again. ]
Kocho, do you have everything?
[ she is now holding two very important things. the syringe and the laptop. ]
[ Not that anyone can see it, but the color drains from Dimitri's face immediately. The pressure of the knife sinking into her flesh, the sound of her voice—it has to be real, right? This is Neena, isn't it? Is it Neena, or her ghost, her memory?
If Giyuu manipulated all the other killers, and Shinobu did not kill Flayn, then what did that make Neena?
His head aches, and there's the smell of smoke. He does not move when Giyuu grabs him, and his voice goes deathly cold. ]
Let go—
[ Shinobu better get moving, because she's carrying all the important cargo here. Dimitri certainly isn't going to get in her way, because he's going to try and pull away from Giyuu and grab into the dark. ]
Hello? Why was that Neena's voice? There's smoke? So there must be fire, right? Her headache and nosebleed still aren't helping any of this. Everything is still way too much, and she's more alarmed than she has the words to say. ]
Dimitri reaches forward in the darkness, but there is nothing there. Neena does not speak up again.
Shinobu has the right idea, though. Except, perhaps not the right execution. She will find herself slamming right into something solid, a hollow thunk reminiscent of wood upon impact. The syringe will be safe, but she will drop the laptop as a result. It hits and clatters against the floor. The smell of smoke gets stronger.
There's another spark from below the desk. A second later, a fire blooms and roars. It grows unnaturally fast, eating away at the desk and licking at the monitors. Numbers flash on the center monitor, counting down.

And then the heat from the fire causes the image to sputter and die.
On the bright side, fire is an excellent lightsource. Now they can see that Shinobu ran right into the door. When did it lock? They certainly didn't shut it behind them, and they didn't hear it... Maybe it was during the Mamma Mia fiasco. But perhaps, more importantly, they will see that Neena is gone. They are alone in the room.
[ he isn't surprised when dimitri resists and he isn't bothered by the change in tone. he expected it as much and it only causes him to grip dimitri's arm harder. he doesn't mean to do this but— ]
It's a trick.
[ which becomes all too obvious as literally everything starts to go up in flames revealing that she's not there and it's just them and the fire with the door. the clatter of the laptop on the ground gets giyuu's attention and he scoops it up with his free hand and holds it close to his person. sorry dimitri, he's not letting him go. not when he's emotionally compromised.
he doesn't think to tell shinobu about the door since he trusts her to figure that out. it's either that or....crispy times. ]
[ the fire doesn't help, head throbbing, but the light does. neena disappears, and he's left with the two of them, and the flames. nothing else.
he doesn't say anything, and he barely feels giyuu there. he just feels smoke stinging at his eyes. shinobu is small, and the door is incredibly heavy. maybe the same strategy would work again.
they don't have much time to cycle through the options again, though. so he just hands shinobu the bag of chips he'd taken earlier, giving her a second or two to do something with it before he full-force rams the door with his shoulder. giyuu can come along, but he's not stopping. ]

And then the heat from the fire causes the image to sputter and die.
On the bright side, fire is an excellent lightsource. Now they can see that Shinobu ran right into the door. When did it lock? They certainly didn't shut it behind them, and they didn't hear it... The fire continues to grow.

he doesn't say anything, and he barely feels giyuu there. he just feels smoke stinging at his eyes. shinobu is small, and the door is incredibly heavy. maybe the same strategy would work again.
they don't have much time to cycle through the options again, though. so he just hands shinobu the bag of chips he'd taken earlier, giving her a second or two to do something with it before he full-force rams the door with his shoulder. giyuu can come along, but he's not stopping. ]
