[he doesn't even have time to argue before flayn bolts and for a moment junpei blinks and...well. he doesn't move, but upon her return and as she gives him the doll it's much harder to hide his expression which is some mixture of fondness and misery.
for a while he doesn't say anything and it gives flayn enough time to actually look at purple heart--to look at junpei, who isn't exactly as suave as his persona but rather someone who looks a bit uncertain and caught flat-footed.]
...I don't know what to say. [at least he's honest, doll held in his left hand as the scrunchie shifts on his wrist just enough to reveal a bulky black watch beneath it. but he doesn't quite give it back right away either.]
[i, britt, know exactly why he's miserable, but flayn doesn't know the zero escape lore, so. oof. that expression makes her feel a little uncertain, and she searches his face as he holds onto the doll.]
...I think she would want you to have it while we are trapped here. She kept it with her while we were on the island... and she said it was very important to her.
[he's not going to tell her. like. that's not fair at all, and he understands her intentions and it's sweet. it's for that reason that he does smile a little because...what other impression would one have?]
...it was a present for her. We weren't going to see each other again for a really, really long time. I wasn't ever sure she really did keep it after all these years. [he knows now that this doll is ultimately what killed akane kurashiki the first time, but he doesn't say that. actually, he's a little surprised she kept it and even had it on the island. then again he's been sitting on that knowledge for weeks but it's fine.]
I just kinda wish it had protected her the way I thought it would back when I was twelve.
...on the island, she mentioned that it might be able to be used to protect someone if you bound their spirit to it with a hair.
[she says, like this is totally normal. maybe it is? it's apparently normal enough to be given as a gift?? even if there was a little mix-up with the type of doll it is.]
Perhaps, if you return it to her once you see her again, you could complete the ritual together so it would work...?
Did she? [there's a wry sort of expression that says he's a little surprised but also "why are you like this, akane?"] She knew more about these things than I ever did.
But...if she gave it to you, she must've thought you needed it more than she did. You have people to protect too, don't you?
Fair enough. He's been worried about all of you, and she was looking forward to being able to trust you enough with her secret. So...guess I had no reason to keep lying to you either.
[she didn't mean to make wen ning worry... ... ...although a lot of her Everything has been worrying since she came here.
sometimes life just be like that.]
Well - I am glad that you decided to trust me, as well. I would not have blamed you had you chosen not to. [given, y'know, what they both know her role is. but they've talked about that before.]
I know it is. But... you did not ask for any of this, either.
[and he's only human. someday, she might strike down someone he cares about - and how could she ever blame him if he wasn't upset with her for it? it being the nature of the game wouldn't make it hurt any less.]
...I suppose mostly I wish we could have met any other way. It would be nice to be able to be friends with out all of this [murder] hanging over us.
Yeah...no, I agree with you. But it's just all the more reason to try to find a way to end this game sooner, right? Then all we have is time to get to know each other better before we go home. Or at least I hope so.

there's a small doll in her hand, which they've both just seen. she holds it out to him as she tries to get her breath back.]

Now I know why that is.

Junpei. It's nice to officially meet you.

It is a pleasure to meet you, too, Junpei!

Who introduced themselves to your first, Winter or Shadows?

Veronica did. But I knew Wen Ning from the island, so I suppose if we are being literal he did.
