chucks a gun at you

At the very beginning, Wei Wuxian struck him as a bully who would go so far as to pretend they were beset by a throng of demons to get a mere reaction out of him. Absolutely terrible. But he realized before long that this was the man from Jin Ling’s memories, and he was intrigued once he learned that Wei Wuxian was Jin Ling’s uncle.

Amid his fretting about the competition, he was offered a self-defense course. As much as he didn’t want to subject himself to the labor of learning, he pushed himself to accept. Surely it wouldn’t be as painful as learning Thunder Breathing and total concentration breathing? (It wasn’t, but it still hurt and scared the years off of him, because Wei Wuxian was a gremlin.) For all his complaining and crying, that Wei Wuxian spent time on him like this meant a lot to him.

He was fairly optimistic about his future until Wei Wuxian brought up the concept of alternate realities. He didn’t want to burden Wei Wuxian with his concerns about inevitable failure then, so he never talked about them. But, in some ways, this knowledge exacerbated his worse habits by feeding into his self-deprecation for failing to achieve the perceived heights of his alternate self.

For a long while, he tried to convince himself to be more useful by being proactive, but his fears wouldn’t leave him as the weeks dragged on, shackling him in place. Food was always a source of comfort for him in the mansion when he would eat with his friends or be given something to chew on by the grown-ups. Wei Wuxian and Phoenix were the two adults who fed him the most between the mansion and the camp, and that endeared them both to Zenitsu, who wanted to at least make sure that they were eating in turn. Offering to help out at the kitchen and then having that offer accepted by Wei Wuxian were small steps in a better direction for him, because he was able to do something—even if it was so little as to be next to nothing on his part, it was better than nothing—in spite of being down on himself during and after the week he’d been cursed to fall in love. This Saturday routine kept his head above the surface of the water, and he always thought that Wei Wuxian was doing extremely good work for checking on everyone after each trial.

Wei Wuxian never pressed too hard in their conversations, which made it easy for Zenitsu to indulge in distractions between them. Rather than dwelling on the dark clouds looming over them, they’d talk about friends and family in a positive light. They also shared memories, and these in tandem with the project to send the dead paper cranes—the lonely Evan in particular—or leave them flowers at the memorial hall showed him that Wei Wuxian was a very kind, good-natured soul who had a knack for uplifting the people around him. He didn’t push certain things, and that took some stress off of Zenitsu in times like the week Shinobu and Giyu died when he was feeling a fresh wave of helplessness and therefore emotionally unfit to be tackling old baggage about his uselessness.

But Wei Wuxian’s obsession with spice was kind of unbearable and Zenitsu definitely judged him for it.

They talked about the only option being to keep putting one foot in front of the other, and Wei Wuxian struck him as a walking example of this. Although Zenitsu wanted to be the same, he felt that, to his dismay, he was struggling to keep up with everyone else. Wei Wuxian never said anything of the sort, though, and instead moved them to a brighter scenery in this depressing time. Zenitsu always appreciated that people like Wei Wuxian were willing to put in the time to look after him; at the same time, it fed into his guilt that he wasn’t doing enough.

Then he died and the killers revealed themselves. Wei Wuxian welcomed Zenitsu back to the side of the living at trial like it was nothing. It was surreal, but a taste of something constant after his steep plunge into emotional turmoil.

Afterward, they talked about choice and the differences in the killings that had taken place here as opposed to those at the mansion. It was an important conversation in that Wei Wuxian seemed to be stressing that he could make a choice after his killers had made theirs. He didn’t follow this conversation very well, because he’d already accepted that the onus had been on him for being incompetent in the first place, but he did figure that it was meant to empower him and thought that it was an admirable thing of Wei Wuxian, who must've already had a lot on his own plate, to do.

Wei Wuxian, for all his spontaneity, was very much a constant who knew to keep things light when they were getting too heavy. Zenitsu always took the easy way out and never could muster up the nerves to discuss anything too weighty for long, even if he did worry for Wei Wuxian as much as he did for everyone else.
