[Anaido stares at it. A simple locked wooden door. Unfortunately, as far as he recalls, brilliant detectives are not masters at opening doors, but...well, everything is a mystery, isn't it? This is sure a mystery. The sounds he hears, muffled, behind the door, however, are...hm.]
[Concerning.]
Is someone behind there? [He spares a glance to the others, leaning in...and then he knocks on the door, three times, and raises his voice.] Hello! Could you please let us in?
[ phoenix waits for someone to ask 'who's there' ..... but nobody does. it's the biggest disappointment of his life, clearly. ]
... Tough crowd today.
[ he gives it a few minutes, then.... ]
Guess it's time for me to test out my new skills.
[ takes out a homemade lockpick and gets to work on the door... after a couple of minutes, it seems like something happened, but the door still doesn't open. ]
Everybody knock off the bad jokes and move aside-- I got this. This totally worked before.
[Digging in his fanny pack with a . . . squelching noise, before producing what seems to be a twisted and burnt bit of plastic. It's hard to make out exactly what it says now - ve Gar Unl ed st ass? Presenting it to the door.
[Meanwhile, as soon as Anaido just starts. Knocking on the door, Magnus turns around and walks away. Just as Taako is fiddling with the pasta pass, you can hear him shout - ]
Heads up!
[And he's running and barging into the door with his shoulder. Despite Taako already getting it open.]
Anyway. They've successfully unlocked the door, and with Magnus barging into it with his shoulder, the door creaks open very quickly. It shakes a little, like it might fall off its hinges, but this one is not cursed. It's going to be fine, probably, maybe.
Assuming they all follow Magnus in at some point here, the first thing they'll see is that... there's no one in here? What was that sound, then? There's no indication of it for now, and they can't see very much; they're in what appears to be the entrance to a stone hallway, with torches placed in brackets to their left and right. Just two torches, though. No other paths are visible yet, just darkness a few feet ahead of them. This hall is also covered in cobwebs, for... I was going to say for the taller members to enjoy but I remembered you're all tall. Fuck. They're for everybody's hair now.
Also the door will close when they've all entered, as these doors always do.]
[Anaido manages to step aside before MAGNUS RUSHES IN, and...wouldn't you know it, sometimes a pasta ass pass and a dad and muscle can get the job done.]
[He nods, stepping inside, and...wow, sure is dark, huh? Where did those weird crying sounds come from? Anaido ignores the cobwebs in his hair, glancing back at the other three as he approaches one of the brackets. Louis Crabsworth pokes his eyestalks out of his pocket, and Anaido pats it comfortingly.]
Well! This is omnious! [God, he sounds so cheerful.] Shall I grab one of the torches to light the way?
Hey-- What the hell! Don't steal my door opening thunder!
[Taako thinks about doing a little bit where he stands outside and declares that he's Good Out Here, but he also feels the pull the narrative. Just bitching a bit as he walks inside. If Phoenix isn't taking the other torch, he will.]
The kids don't say that. They'd call you a dickhead for not having Dark Vision then, [dabbing. with the torch in his hand?]
[He was rushing in, but then he got his head covered in cobways. Brushing that out, making exaggerated 'yuck' noises, and stopping while the others catch up before starting to walk once they approach.
[The torchlight, as they proceed ahead, shows... more hallway for a while, but the walls do not remain empty. There are an increasing number of alcoves in the walls as they continue on, carvings and plaques embedded into the stones; each bears a single name and two dates. In some there are burnt-out thin sticks of wood, in others decayed remnants of fruits and other foods, and in many alcoves there will be at least one dried-out flower.
Some also have urns tucked into the alcove, bearing either the same name as the plaque or a simple design.
As they carry on, though, just like Phoenix suggested, they find a branching path. To the left they see a faint light, and to the right there is the faint scent of incense.]
[He takes the torch in hand, moving down the corridor...and right away, of course, he sees the numbers. Those dates in the plaques. His eyes fixate on them, and he frowns, shaking his head as he moves along.]
[He pauses by a few, trying to read the names, if possible.]
How dreary.
[A place of the dead...he might linger back behind the others, reading dates and such as much as his eyes can let him, before he notices the fork up ahead.]
[The thing about the carvings is that every so often, they'll catch sight of names they recognize out of the corners of their eyes. People who probably shouldn't be listed here, who they last remember seeing alive. But if they take a closer look... it was a totally different name on that plaque, after all. Maybe just a trick of the torchlight?
As Magnus rushes toward the light, he does not find a crypt monster! The light comes from a small room, just big enough for the four of them, with a door on the opposite side. Candles are placed along the walls to light it, but their candleholders are embedded and cannot be removed. Next to the door is a larger alcove, with a blank plaque and a similarly blank urn; no one is memorialized here, it seems. Four gems are embedded below the urn, all of them dulled: orange, pink, sky blue, and dark blue. An unlit stick of incense and a match sit next to the urn.
The candlelight wavers as a weak but chilly breeze drifts through, and they all hear a quiet, mournful whisper:]
[Anaido follows Magnus - honestly, deep down, he can't say he disagrees with just rushing ahead. In most circumstances he would do the same thing, but he's learned some caution. This isn't the time to rush ahead and killed, not here, not now.]
[Especially in this strange crypt with this strange voice that he frowns at, glancing around. Anaido then moves ahead, bending down to glance at the gems, before looking over his shoulder at the rest.]
...I assume they mean the dead from our games? We have to...honor them, somehow?
[ wow he's the wrong ace attorney character for this. he spends a little too long looking at the changing names -- but then follows along after magnus and company. ]
.... Something along those lines. I expect they want us to light that incense.
[ though whether that will help or just make zombies pop up and attack them is another thing entirely ]
[The gems are not loose, sorry Taako. The pink gem pulses faintly with a dim light, just once, when he suggests lighting the incense.
Nothing seems to happen when Magnus mentions those two names, nor anything when he thinks seriously about losses from murdergames. But when he thinks seriously about people he's lost elsewhere, the orange gem pulses once as well.
[He reaches over for the incense, missing the glow of the gems, and holds it up. Unfortunately, his other hand is preoccupied with the torch, so he gestures to the match.]
Someone light it for me.
[And then, with a sigh - he furrows his eyebrows, thinking.]
Evan. Tsurumaru. The dead from the island...Wen Ning. [A brief, warm smile.] Kairi. Giyuu. Ogata. Shinobu. Akane. Flayn. Isabelle. Ah..Marie. Maomao, I think her name was. Zoe. Me.
[A pause. There's something distant in his face, but mistakenly fond.]
Ah...Kaeru-kun.
[The girl who died in the case he was solving, before he was wrenched from it.]
... Mia Fey. [ he really wishes he had her guidance now, bc even though it's been like nine years he still needs someone to tell him to think outside the box and turn a receipt over. ]
[ okay but no, seriously, if she were here.... she'd be doing a better job than he is. ] Evan. Tsurumaru. Those who died in the mansion -- our round or previous rounds. [ i refuse to list them all so pretend he is. ] Taako. Magnus. Me. Those on the boat..... and those in Shibuya. I can't list everyone, we'd be here all day. But you get the picture.
[ despite the light tone and that his expression is just as goofy and vague as always, he is seriously and sadly thinking about the lost (even spares a thought for dahlia and godot who is probably dead idek). ]
[Anyway, just dropping the mean goofy act for a second, but he takes a minute to spit it out in front of two practical strangers. Crossing his arms over himself and tugging on the end of his braid.]
[Well, then. Assuming I'm allowed to do this in one turn, grabbing the incense and bringing it back and lighting it.]
Yeah, everyone in Shibuya. Especially Maya, Anthy, Max. Miki and Monika, and Ichigo and Makoto, and Seizaboro and Mutsu.
[Then, touching the orange stone that flickered, his expression going wounded. A little angry, to have to think these things for a fucking puzzle, but appropriately sad.]
[The incense is now lit, giving off a nice, calming scent as they all name off their dead...
But like, there's one blank plaque and one urn. The first name mentioned of someone not from a previous game-- Kaeru-- appears on the plaque. The urn is now painted with the image of a well, and the sky-blue gem glows with a faint light...
Nothing else happens, though. It looks like the light is not as strong as it could be, flickering slightly.]

Quite ominous, yes. We're due to hit a fork in the road before reaching progressively deadlier things, so I suggest we all stay together.

[Yeah, he'll look at some plaques and carvings - I mean, why not - but also stopping at the fork. Making sure Magnus is going first.]
