I think everyone has bad experiences with getting kidnapped by megalomaniacs. So it's not personal, it's just self-preservation for them to distrust the nearest authority figure. Probably.

Probably. Even though it's been weeks and we've done our best. [but they shrug after that.] It's not that I blame anyone, but you can see how frustrating it can be.
