I think everyone has bad experiences with getting kidnapped by megalomaniacs. So it's not personal, it's just self-preservation for them to distrust the nearest authority figure. Probably.

Probably. Even though it's been weeks and we've done our best. [but they shrug after that.] It's not that I blame anyone, but you can see how frustrating it can be.
...in a way though, yes. Trust is tricky business because you won't learn anything if you don't trust people, but at the same time you may bring harm to yourself if you trust too much. It's about finding a balance.
