From what I understand, that's not entirely common. It seems as though it's half and half.

More or less. Nothing really changes for him regardless if your ending is good or it's bad. I don't know if that's the true reason, but it's an idea as to why there's nothing at stake for him.

That one I have no answer for. It was surprising to us, too.
