I've heard a variety of theories as to what exactly we've gotten ourselves into, but these "remnants" you refer to are the corrupting influences brought about by the residents' various memories and traumas, which this area has responded to? I confess I don't quite understand how such things work. Seems more like something a Jedi would know.
